Inaugural lecture by Professor Neil Selwyn. This lecture examines the mundane and often 'messy' realities of higher education in the 'digital age'. Drawing on a variety of theoretical and empirical examples, the lecture explores the intimate links between digital technology and wider shifts within contemporary higher education -- not least the continued rise of the global 'entrepreneurial' university. Crucially, the lecture considers the potential gains and losses associated with these ongoing digitizations of higher education - highlighting ways that less desirable trends might be challenged, and possibly changed for the better.
